History of diamonds

In the last 2000 years, diamonds is one of the precious gems that will always remain in the knowledge of people. It is a gem that is widely known not only for its beauty but also for its healing power.

• The adoration of this stone all over the world started out in India, 400 BC. During that time, the standard for diamonds only consisted of one thing - diamonds should be big.

• The long tradition of wearing the engagement ring on the fourth finger of the left hand all started from Egypt. It was believed to be the "vein of love" of the person, wherein it ran directly from the finger all the way to the heart.

• The very first diamond that was ever given as an engagement ring can be traced as far back as 1477, during the time when Archduke Maximilian of Austria have fallen for Mary of Burgundy that he gave her a gold ring that bears a sophisticated “M” on it made out of diamonds.

• Back in the sixteenth century, the method of faceting diamonds was made. This process turned the diamond more fiery and brilliant. It has become really popular since then when it comes to implementing on jewelry.

• Back in the Dark Ages, diamonds were highly regarded for its medicine power in healing wounds and curing ailments when they’re ingested by someone sick.

• The diamonds that people see today are rated by the four Cs - karat, color, clarity and cut. It was established back in the 50s by GIA. These 4 factors influence the retail cost of a diamond.

• The diamond is created in various colors, which depends on the minerals present during its formation.

• Natural diamonds are formed beneath the surface of the earth. The diamonds travel up and will eventually get accessible to humanity due to volcanic activity.

 

Prepping Diamonds

From the sound of how diamonds appear, it may seem like they take the shape just as it is. But you’ve heard numerous feedback about how a diamond can be very complex in shaping it when it hits the final product as a jewelry. It takes a lot of processes to get to the shape it has, which is why they can be very expensive.

• After the diamonds are mind, they are then sorted into 3 categories which are boart, industry quality and gem quality.

• The diamond will lose about half of its weight during the polishing and cutting process.

• Miners move a lot of tons of earth in order to get that carat of diamonds.

• Cutting the diamond to a karat size by hand can take a lot of time, mostly for a full day or more than that, depending on the quality and the cut of the stone.

• The US has a single operating mine solely for diamonds, wherein it is located at a state park that tourists are able to mine for the diamonds and able to keep which ones they find.
