Overview of the Four C’s of Diamonds

When you buy a diamond ring or any diamond jewelry, what are the factors that you consider in order to get the best quality? The average buyer of diamond jewelry barely cares about the quality of diamonds, but to those who are serious about it, they take the extra step by arming themselves the knowledge of choosing the best quality diamonds. And that is by taking a look at the four C's - color, clarity, karat, and cut.

The four C's of diamond quality is established by the Gemological Institute of America. It is a universal method for assessing the quality of any kind of diamond which is scattered anywhere in the globe. This also includes the synthetic diamonds and imitation diamonds. This way, buyers of diamonds will know that what they have in their hands is either a natural, synthetic or a simple imitation. The least here is that buyers are aware of what they are buying.

Among the four C's that you'd want to get a good understanding is the karat weight. This is another term for buyers that ask "how big the diamond is". This is a measurement that jewelers utilize when calculating the size of the gem. The bigger the karat weight is, the higher its price. The reason is that larger diamonds tend to be more complex to find, thus it means that they are always short on supply.

When it comes to color, the most popular choice is obviously the colorless one. However, there are other colored diamonds available, too, which is a rarity.
